Heavy Winds at Mundra Port Cause Mooring Lines to Part; Ultra Large Container Vessel Gets Loose – [21 March 2026]
Last Saturday (21 March 2026) at Mundra Port, India, C/V MSC ALEXANDRA (See photos above & below), a reportedly 14,000 TEU container ship, broke her mooring lines and began an errant journey around the harbor. Built in 2010, the ship measures approximately 366 meters (1200.7 feet) in length overall (LOA) and 52 meters (170.6 feet) in width (beam). It has a summer deadweight capacity of roughly 165,908 to 190,734 tons. She’s big, and when loaded (or not) she presents a sizable wind surface that when hit broadside provides equally sizable amounts of tension on any lines meant to keep her secure to the dock.
Media accounts (See links below) have us understand that a strong storm broke out and caused the area around Mundra’s CT-3 Terminal to be buffeted by heavy wind forces that caused this incident. So far, we know of no in injuries to personnel.
It’s academic that when the economies of scale that have made mega container ships like C/V MSC ALEXANDRA so attractive to owners, the physical attributes of those vessels must be taken into account in a worst case scenario; from a number of different perspectives.
