Dockworker Fatally Injured as Container Falls on Him [Longoni, Mayotte Island – 20 September 2023]

Information coming to Blueoceana Company this afternoon, has us understand that an as-yet unnamed 58-60 year old longshore worker was killed while discharging containers from M/V KIARA (See photo below) while the vessel was berthed at the Mayotte Island port of Longoni yesterday (20 September 2023).

The sole available media report (See link below), provides that the victim was struck by a “poorly secured container that fell…” At the moment, we have no insight as to where the container may have fell from, nor where the victim was positioned when the container fell on him. Moreover, no information has become available as to how the container was “poorly secured.” We know only that the container, one of many bringing 600,000 bottles of water to this French-administered, Indian Ocean territory ex M/V KIARA, fell on the victim who sustained grievous wounds and subsequently died.
