While information is comparatively scant, we now know or have good reason to believe that a longshore worker employed by a non-union stevedore firm (Seaonus) operating at Savannah port has very recently (a week ago) died as a result of injuries sustained in an accident that occurred on or about the last week of October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Based upon limited information available (Including the OSHA Fat\/Cat inspection record appearing below), our understanding is that a bundle of plywood fell from the raised forks of an industrial truck and struck the worker. We believe this accident occurred on dock, during the course of discharge operations from an as-yet unnamed vessel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Should further information develop we will update this post accordingly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
UPDATE: 02 December 2022 – 10:15 PM EST<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We are in a position to provide the following information, which originates from a newly emerging [on site] source:<\/p>\n\n\n\n a). <\/strong> The fatally injured worker was a regular employee of the stevedoring contractor, who had been called upon to attend the work at Savannah from his customary work port (Jacksonville, FL);<\/p>\n\n\n\n b).<\/strong> According to our source, the driver of the industrial truck was driving forward (versus with the load trailing) with the cargo obscuring his view; <\/p>\n\n\n\n c).<\/strong> The industrial truck struck the victim, whereupon the operator quickly engaged the machine’s brakes;<\/p>\n\n\n\n d). <\/strong> The load slid off the forks and onto the victim, killing him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
