Information coming to Blueoceana Company speaks to the death of a dock worker at the Port of Antwerp, Belgium late Monday (07 February) afternoon, the victim of a straddle carrier turnover in the Deurganckdock area of that port.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The worker, whose name is presently withheld, was operating a machine carrying a 40 foot intermodal container when the accident occurred at the MPET facility, which we understand is jointly operated by PSA and MSC and is commonly referred to as the MSC-PSA European Terminal. The only media account presently available (See<\/em><\/strong> link below), theorizes that “a wrong maneuver” may have been the cause. That, however, is simple conjecture at this point in time. The same article reports that the accident victim “landed on the road surface with his cabin several meters away.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n Independently, we are informed that straddle carriers at that terminal are typically equipped seat belt restraint systems which include red external lights that provide a positive indication of seat belt restraint system engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We should point out that while the linked-to article is equivocal as to the victim’s physical condition, our understanding is that he subsequently succumbed to his injuries later that day while in hospital. There are still conflicting reports, however, with an equal number (3) on each side of the disposition.
