From a friend in a more advanced time zone, Blueoceana Company has learned of yet another serious allison between a docking container ship and a stationary container gantry crane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier this morning (sometime before noon local time), the 8500 TEU C\/V OOCL DURBAN<\/strong> (See<\/em> photo below) slammed into a boomed down ship-to- shore container gantry crane (Crane No. 8) at Yang Ming’s Kaohsiung marine terminal in Southern Taiwan. The structure collapsed, bringing down a neighboring gantry crane (Crane No. 6) and some adjacent container stacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Two crane mechanics\/operators were initially trapped within the downed cranes. It took an hour to free them. One longshoreman was hospitalized with severe arm lacerations and chest pains; we understand he will survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It’s too early to know the incident’s root cause, but we continue to research this docking incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Links to Media Accounts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
