In what appears to be a case wherein a service truck (fitted out for vessel mooring purposes) was pulled over the stringpiece and into the water, we see yet another spectacle of what can go wrong with this type of exercise. The photographs below depict the aftermath observed recently at Port of Singapore Authority-originated, PSA International’s Voltri Terminal at\u00a0Genoa Port \u00a0http:\/\/www.vte.it\/en\/history<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Establishing and adhering to a well-thought-out set of vessel mooring procedures (including effective and instantaneous communications with the relevant shipboard personnel)<\/em> is critically important. Fortunately, we understand that no one was seriously injured at Genoa… but we completely appreciate that workers can be (and have been) killed in similar circumstances.<\/p>\n

The Genoa incident is simply the latest in a series of line-taking incidents occurring worldwide. In the photo below, we offer an example of another that took place last year at the Port of Baltimore, Maryland (USA).<\/p>\n
