Dock Worker Killed in Straddle Carrier Tipover [Bremerhaven, DE ~ 30 November 2015]

Blueoceana Company has been informed by sources in Europe, that a 50 year old longshore worker (as yet unnamed) was fatally injured during the execution of a right-hand turn at the Eurogate terminal in Bremerhaven on 30 November 2015. We do not know if the machine was laden at the time of the accident, how it may have been carrying its load, nor the speed at which it was traveling. We have been advised, however, that the operator’s cab was completely destroyed as a result.

From other sources, we have received a photograph of a toppled straddle carrier that appears much like the sort utilized at Eurogate and include it below. The cab appears to have been sheared off the machine’s frame, and the near-entirety of the straddle carrier appears supported by timbers as part of a potential dis-assembly process. It should be understood that there are some conflicting accounts in relation to that particular machine’s identity. We’re actively attempting to sort that out with friends on the ground in Germany and will, if necessary, update this posting accordingly.

We are also awaiting further information in relation to the worker’s name and other relevant facts. That information will be provided to this post upon receipt.
