West African Docker Found Dead in Cargo Hold [Dakar, Senegal – 03 October 2026]
From a friend and colleague at Dakar port, Senegal, Blueoceana Company has learned that Frédéric Sylvain Diatta, a docker at that port, has been found dead in the cargo hold of an as-yet unnamed Turkish vessel. The circumstances of his death are still a matter of some conjecture .
Mr. Diatta, a member of the Senegalese Transport Workers Union, had been among a cohort of workers engaged in the discharge of a bagged rice cargo on 29 September 2026 when he turned up missing. His work colleagues began a search of the marine terminal, with no result. Days later, his cellphone was found in one of the vessel’s cargo holds and his body was subsequently found at the bottom of that hold.
There are no reports of obvious injuries, nor are there any direct indications of cause. There are suspicions of potential oxygen deficiencies, inasmuch as rice cargoes have been associated with oxygen depletion within enclosed spaces and fumigant exposure is also being considered in a causal sense.
A judicial inquiry has been initiated.
