Longshoreman Fatally Injured in Shipboard Accident [Georgetown, Guyana – 16 January 2025]

Information received today by Blueoceana Company has us understand that, Mr. Dallas Sharples, a 63 year old dockworker, was killed at Georgetown port, Guyana yesterday while aboard M/V GPO AQUILA (See photo below) during the discharge of intermodal containers.

Media reports available to us allege that while working alongside colleagues Mr. Sharples was struck by a crane and propelled into one of the ship’s cargo hatches. It is unclear if the crane was part of ship’s gear or a shoreside mobile crane. We believe the crane was one of the latter.

The stevedore/terminal operator has been identified as John Fernandes, Ltd, whose occupational safety performance over the last few years, according to our firm’s historical files, has been something less than favorable.
