Marine Terminal Worker Dies in Forklift Truck-Related Accident [Antwerp, Belgium – 05 June 2024]

Information coming to Blueoceana Company this afternoon relates that an as-yet unnamed worker was killed beneath an industrial truck at the Nova Natie – Churchill Marine Terminal (Wilmarsstraat 416 – Quay 416-430, Antwerpen) on 05 June 2024.

Over time, we’ve learned that Media reports coming from Antwerp chronicling marine cargo handling industry accidents can be characteristically short and notoriously vague in their content. Notwithstanding, we include links to two such [identical] accounts below. We have sent inquiries to friends at Antwerp port, and hope to have further information in the fullness of time. If and when additional information is received, it will be posted here as an UPDATE.

UPDATE [12 June 2024/12:00 PM EST]: From a friend at Antwerp port, we now understand that the worker referred to above has been identified as Mr. Roald Serneels (See photo below). Unconfirmed (but reliable) reports indicate that he was employed as a checker and was struck by a 32 ton forklift truck being operated in a forward direction by a fellow worker. ========================================== For colleagues at Antwerp port, we understand that a memorial service has been scheduled for Friday, June 14, 2024 at 12:00 PM at St. Anthony’s Church Armand Reusensplein 3 – 2930 Brasschaat-Centrum
