Brazilian Longshoreman Struck and Killed by Large Fallen Drill Bit. Hit during Granite Block Shipboard Loading [27 May 2024 – Vitória Port (Espirito Santo), Brazil]

On 27 May, while assisting with the loading of granite blocks aboard an as-yet unnamed vessel at the port of Vitória (North of Rio; in the State of Espirito Santo), Mr. Alex Sandro Alves Silva, 50, was struck by a large drill bit (See photo below) which came away from one of the granite pieces of cargo during the loading process. Drill bits such as these are used to carve out and free up granite blocks during the quarrying exercise.

The victim was struck by the drill bit while in a cargo hold, and was subsequently lifted out of the ship in a personnel carrier assisted by colleagues.

Reports indicate that he was lucid and able to walk, but upon transfer to a local hospital his condition worsened and he fell into a coma. He was declared brain dead on the afternoon of 30 May.
