Marine Terminal Worker Fatally Struck By Falling Paper Product Bale [Philadephia, PA – 25 September 2023]

Word reaching Blueoceana Company a few moments ago has us understand that a young marine terminal worker and member of the International Longshoremen’s Association Local Union 1291 was fatally injured earlier today, when a large bale of paper product either fell from a yard-stowed stack or fell from the lifting carriage of the industrial truck he was operating.

Subject to confirmation, we’re told that the bale fell and struck the victim’s machine while, concurrently, the victim jumped from the machine and sustained the crushing injuries by the erratically moving bale while attempting to escape.

Scott Abney, 31 years old and the father of a two year old son, died on-site at Philadelphia port’s Tioga Marine Terminal (See illustrations below) in what appears to be a terrible crushed-by accident. Our understanding is that he was employed by Delaware River Stevedoring Co at the time.

We anticipate further information, and will update this post if and when any factual data is received.
