1 Merchant Mariner Killed; Another Seriously Injured in Ro-Ro Ship Vehicular Run Over [Salerno, Italy – 14 September 2023]

Very sad news coming to us from Salerno port, Italy, confirms the death of a twenty nine year old 2nd mate and the serious injury of a 1st officer near the immediate ramp area of the Ro-Ro Ferry M/V CARTOUR DELTA (see photo below) while operations were being conducted at Pier 26 on 14 September 2023. The identities of the victims are yet to be released.

While media reports conflict some (likely owing to the translation from Italian to English), it appears that the two ship’s officers were conferring near the vessel’s stern ramp when the fifth wheel on a terminal tractor failed and released a trailer it had in tow. The trailer was sent down an incline and crushed the two men, killing one and seriously injuring the other.

Update – 21 September 4:30 PM: We now understand that the fatally injured 2nd officer has been identified as Sr. Antonio Donato (See photo above), and that the injured 1st officer remains hospitalized at Salerno with a broken femur.
