Longshoreman Fatally Crushed By Intermodal Container During Loadback Operations [Arica Port, Chile – 21 August 2023]

With deep regret, Blueoceana Company has been informed by a colleague at another Chilean port that Sr. Marcelo Tapia Rojas, 51 years old and a port worker employed by the marine terminal operator Ultramar, was fatally crushed by an intermodal container while working C/V MAERSK EVERGLADES (See photo below) at the port of Arica (Northern Chile) on 21 August 2023 (five days ago).

It is still unclear as to whether the container crushed Sr. Tapia Rojas while he was aboard the ship or while on dock. We hope to have further facts in the fullness of time. Should those facts become available, they will be posted here as an UPDATE.
