Two Longshore Workers Victims in Apparent Atmospheric Incident Aboard Bulk Carrier [Puerto Coronel, Chile – 07 August 2023]

With great regret, Blueoceana Company has learned of the death of two longshore workers who were aboard the coal bulker M/V SAKIZAYA MIRACLE (See photo, below) at the Chilean port of Coronel on Monday, August 7, 2023.

Srs. Fabián Garay and Alejandro Camaño were apparently preparing for the coal cargo’s discharge within one of the vessel’s holds and were shortly later found overcome. They were both placed within a personnel cage and lifted to shore (See video clip, below), but the retrieval was to no avail.

While toxicology reports are not available at this early date, it has been theorized that both were overcome by the formation of carbon monoxide within the coal-laden hold of the vessel. In such enclosed space bulk coal carriages, large quantities of carbon monoxide can be generated during the oxidation process.
