Scottish Docker Killed in Breakbulk Cargo Discharge Operation [22 July 2023 – Aberdeen, Scotland]

With great regret, Blueoceana Company has received information that confirms the death of Mr. Albert (Abbey) Ross, a 67 year old dockworker employed by a private stevedoring firm to assist in the discharge of a cargo of steel pipe ex the Lauritzen Line vessel M/V IBERIAN BULKER (See photo below) at Aberdeen port, Scotland two days ago (22 July 2023).

News reports made available to us reveal that the pipe cargo was being discharged from one of the vessel’s hatches, with thirteen (13) lengths of pipe contained within each sling arrangement. We are unaware as to what variation of slinging was being employed, but we do understand that a ship’s deck crane was apparently being used at the time.

One particular sling load lost 4 lengths of pipe during its hoisting. The four lengths fell back into the ship’s hold and struck Mr. Ross. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
