Container Ship Superintendent Fatally Injured in Shipboard Fall [Colon, Panama – 04 June 2023]

From an anonymous source, Blueoceana Company has learned that a 59 year old containership superintendent was killed in a fall aboard C/V APL DUBLIN (See photo below) on 4 June 2023 during operations while the ship was berthed at Manzanillo International Terminal, Colon, Panama.

Our understanding, is that Sr. Luis Morales was on a athwartship walkway observing operations when there arose a need for the container crane working the bay forward of his position to cease work. During the time within which work had been paused, Sr. Morales fell an approximate distance of 70 feet (21.3 meters) into the adjacent bay; over the after edge of the walkway. Upon examination, it is alleged that the safety cable strung across the opening at that location was substantially corroded. Moreover, our source relates that the cable had been painted over, and so effectively masked its defective physical characteristic.
