Longshore Worker Falls From Vessel’s Platform; Drowns [Puerto Rosario, Argentina – 12 May 2023]
Information coming to Blueoceana Company reveals that Sr. Juan Oscar Contreras, a 62 year old dock worker, fell from his position on an outboard access platform aboard an as-yet unnamed vessel and into the ParanĂ¡ River at Puerto Rosario, Argentina, where he drowned during the early morning hours of 12 May 2023.
We are made to understand that the terminal at which the vessel was berthed is known as Terminal de Puerto Rosario and that the concession to operate the facility was granted to a firm known as Vicentin.
From the media accounts available to us (See below), it appears that the organization representing workers (Single Union of Argentine Port Workers – SUPA) has had a history of raising issues related to occupational safety to the management of the terminal operator. Little, if any redress has apparently been realized, however. Thus, immediately after this drowning, SUPA began a strike and demanded greater priority for occupational safety.
SUPA and the terminal operator began conciliatory discussions, and apparently found agreement.
Yesterday (16 May), however, SUPA has alleged that accords reached during those conciliatory discussions were not being honored by the terminal operator and has begun its strike anew.
