Worker Fatally Crushed Under Wheels of RTG [Hong Kong (Kwai Tsing Container Terminal No. 6) – 03 May 2023]

With great regret, news reaching Blueoceana Company provides that a 62 year old worker at Kwai Tsing Container Terminal No. 6 was crushed to death under the wheels of one of the facility’s rubber tired gantry (RTG) cranes the evening of 03 May 2023.

Terminal No. 6 is operated by Hong Kong International Terminals (HIT) which is part of the Hutchison Ports group of companies, and has a large population of RTGs at that terminal. Our understanding, is that the concrete RTG pads (runways) at Terminal 6 were undergoing refurbishment, and that the accident took the life of a worker engaged in that work.

Notwithstanding, we also understand that the Hong Kong Labor Department suspended the work of both the construction contractor and the marine terminal operator’s RTG operations as an investigation was initiated.
