Crew Member Conducting Lashing Activities Lost Overboard; Drowns [Belfast, Northern Ireland – 20 February 2023]

A crew member serving aboard C/V BG RUBY (See photos above & below), was engaged in lashing work when he fell overboard and drowned. BG Frieight (the operator of the ship, based in Rotterdam) is a container carrier conducting a short sea service between ports in the U.K., Ireland and continental Europe. The firm, we understand, runs somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 ships and has resisted efforts to allow only experienced dockers (longshoremen) the right to conduct lashing activities.

The vessel was berthed at Victoria Terminal No.3 at the time.

U.K.’s Marine Accident Investigation Board (MAIB) has begun an investigation, and no further official information is expected to be released until their work concludes. C/V BG RUBY, with a container capacity of 803 TEU), flies the Portuguese flag and we presume that nation will conduct an inquiry, as well.

When further information becomes available (official or not), Blueoceana Company will update this post accordingly.
