Longshore Worker Fatally Injured When Struck By an Intermodal Container Aboard Ship [Port Everglades, Florida – 20 October 2022]

With great regret, a friend and colleague at Port Everglades has apprized us of a fatal accident taking place at that port last night (20 October).

In that accident, a non-union (King Ocean/Sun Terminals) longshore worker was killed aboard M/V HOHEBANK (See photo below) during cargo operations at a Southport berth when he was struck by a container. We expect further factual information in the fullness of time, and will post updates here as they arrive.

Our sense thus far, subject to confirmation, is that the fatally injured worker was struck by a container being loaded and suffered crushing injuries when pushed into another deck-stowed container.

UPDATE – 24 October 2022: Reports coming to us reveal that the deceased worker was Mr. Odely Joseph, 51, of Fort Lauderdale. The cause of death is listed by the Broward County medical examiner as blunt force head trauma.
