63 Year Old Longshore Worker Fatally Crushed In Cargo Hold by Fallen Marble Block [Hualien Port, Taiwan – 02 July 2022]

In researching recent serious accidents occurring at ports worldwide, Blueoceana Company has been made aware of a fatal accident that took place earlier this month at Hualien port, Taiwan, in which a dock worker [Mr. Xia Nan, 63] was crushed and dismembered by a 33 ton block of marble being discharged by a shoreside mobile crane from the hold of M/V TONG MAO 7 (See photo below).

From several reports made available through our research, it appears (but is unconfirmed) that a wire rope (part of the hoisting arrangement) chafed against a structural part of the hatch and parted; sending the 33 ton piece back into the hold and crushing the worker between it and another block of marble still in stowage. (See also, photo below). Our understanding, is that the victim was cut in two.
