Two Longshore Workers Suffocated Aboard Hong Kong-Flagged Bulk Carrier [Karachi, Pakistan – 09 May 2022]

News coming to Blueoceana Company from Pakistan, relates that two dockworkers (Mr. Aslam Samoo, 37 and Mr. Muhammad Habibullah, 35) were fatally suffocated while aboard M/V WEI-HE (See photos above & below) on the morning of 10 May 2022 while the vessel was berthed at the Port of Karachi.

Media accounts provided below posit that the workers had entered a hatch containing soybeans mistakenly and were subsequently overcome by what was likely an oxygen deficient atmosphere. It is well known that organic cargoes, such as soybeans, can readily deplete a space’s oxygen content to dangerous levels.
