Longshore Worker Fatally Injured at Industrial Boulevard Terminal ~ Houston, Texas [10 May 2014]

In preliminary reports coming to Blueoceana Company, we are made to understand that last Saturday night (10 May 2014), a longshore worker (unnamed as yet) was fatally injured aboard an oceangoing vessel (also unnamed) that was loading cargo at Industrial Terminal, LLP.

Our sources reveal that cargo handling operations were allegedly being conducted by Gulfstream Marine (a non-union stevedore), and that the task at hand was the loading of a 300 metric ton heavy lift piece. Our sources state that a spreader beam (borrowed from another stevedoring firm) was being used in the lift and that either a beam shackle or a beam pin hole may have failed, allowing the 300 mt piece to fall a relatively short distance to the tank top. It is alleged that workers in the hold had set up a supporting cradle/dunnage arrangement for the piece, and were readying the cradle to receive the lift. The deceased employee was apparently one of those workers, and was hit by the falling heavy lift piece. Our sources indicate that his legs were severed and that he died in the hold of the ship.
