19 Year Old Marine Terminal Worker Fatally Injured; Unspecific Cause [Dublin, Ireland – 15 May 2021]

With great regret, Blueoceana Company has become aware of a fatal accident occurring at Dublin port, Ireland over this past weekend.

Matthew Grimes, 19, was killed as a result of an industrial accident at a Dublin port “shipping premises” on the afternoon of 15 May.

The articles linked-to below are entirely similar to at least eight other local media attempts to cover this story: the name of the marine terminal and the name of the injured worker’s employer are conspicuously absent. Moreover, there isn’t the faintest indication as to even a hint of potential cause.

As with all similar incidents, continuing research will be undertaken and any supplemental facts coming to us will appear here as updates.

UPDATE [21 May 2021]: From friends at Dublin port, we are now made to understand that Mr. Grimes’ employer of record was Doyle Shipping Group (https://doyleshipping.ie).

UPDATE [27 May 2021]: A report coming to Blueoceana Company from a friend at a European port, alleges that Mr. Grimes was likely crushed between two Ro-Ro cassettes (in the U.S. “Mafis”) while in the yard of Doyle Shipping Group’s terminal. He is said to have been engaged in releasing twist locks on a container being carried upon one particular cassette, when a yard tractor hauling another loaded cassette pinned him between the two.

Exemplar photographs of a loaded Ro-Ro cassettes are shown below:
