Unnamed Worker Found Dead in Hold of Bulk Grain Carrier [Portland, UK – 26 March 2021]

With great regret, Blueoceana Company has learned of a fatal accident occurring aboard M/V BEKS YILMAZ (See photo below) while at berth at Portland port (UK) on 26 March 2021.

Available media accounts (See links below) are somewhat conflicting, in that one of them includes a byline of “Man dies after falling into vat of grain on cargo ship.” No other available media account refers to a fall.

Based upon the content of several other media accounts, we presently conjecture that this worker was either: 1). the victim of an impact fall into the hold of the vessel; 2). the victim of a fall into the hold and was engulfed/suffocated by the grain cargo; or, 3). trimming the grain cargo within the hold and was overcome by a [fumigant rich/oxygen deficient] atmosphere incompatible with life.
