Checker Fatally Struck By RTG [Savannah, Georgia – 26 March 2021]

Blueoceana Company is very sad to report that a fatal accident occurred this morning at Georgia Ports Authority’s Garden City Container Terminal (Savannah, Georgia).

In that accident, Mr. Steven Cobb, a newly enrolled ILA checker (We’re told the son of checker who was killed on the job at the same terminal several years ago) was apparently in the container stacks searching for a box that had not been properly identified within the terminal’s operating system. As he exited a row, an RTG was simultaneously moving past that row; struck and dragged the checker along the RTG’s blind-side runway.

The foregoing raises several important questions about concurrent pedestrian/CHE use within stacks, the type of communications that must be ensured and also the type of training provided to new employees.

The accident is under active investigation by several entities, including the ILA~USMX Joint Safety Committee. As supplemental information becomes available it will be presented here, as an update.
