Docker Fatally Crushed By Container While Working On Deck [Paranagua, Brazil – 27 November 2020]

With great regret, Blueoceana Company has received information via news media sources and friends situated locally, which relates that Marcio Roberto Bernardo, a 52 year old longshore worker at the Port of Paranagua, Brazil, was crushed to death on 27 November while on the deck of an as-yet unnamed Hamburg-Sud vessel. A container had apparently been landed on him.

We’ve acquired two media accounts (which we’ve translated roughly) and two video clips which have direct application to this accident. Links to each are provided below.

In the fulness of time, we hope to have additional information to share and in that event this post will be updated accordingly.

Orientation Of Paranagua Port, Brazil

UPDATE – 30 November 2020 – 8:00 PM [EST]:

In communication with friends in Brazil, we are able to conjecture that the Hamburg-Sud containership at issue is C/V CAP SAN MARCO (See photo below).

Allegedly, the stevedore gang was loading a twin twenty move to the deck. Marcio Roberto Bernardo was on deck, preparing base fittings to receive containers. He apparently noticed an irregularity in relation to one of the center base fittings that was to receive the twin twenty lift and attempted to resolve the problem. Sadly, he was not able to retreat quickly enough.

Issues have allegedly been raised about communications between the deck and the crane operator.
