Lasher Fatally Injured Aboard Container Vessel  [Auckland, New Zealand – 30 August 2020]

With great regret, we’ve been made to understand that a stevedore worker was fatally injured earlier today aboard a container vessel at the New Zealand Ports of Auckland.

Apart from knowing that this incident occurred at the Fergusson Container Terminal, the finer details of the accident have not been made available as yet. At least one media source we’ve seen has indicated, however, that the accident involved a container.

In the fullness of time, we hope to be in receipt of further information. If and when that happens, our intention is to update this post accordingly.

UPDATE – 31 August 2020: An online report reviewed today, if accurate, has provided some clarity in assessing the death of this as-yet unnamed longshore worker (“wharfie” in New Zealand). In the media account linked-to below, the highlighted passage makes an indication that the injured worker was a lasher and that he was “…crushed underneath a container…”
