Cardiac Event Claims The Life of Lasher Aboard Containership [Port Elizabeth, New Jersey – 26 December 2019]

This morning at approximately 9:00 AM local time, a veteran lasher and member of ILA Local Union 1804-1 suffered a fatal heart attack while conducting operations aboard C/V COSCO DEVELOPMENT (See photos below).

Reports coming to Blueoceana Company indicate that Mr. Carlos Lopez had complained to his lashing partner that he wasn’t feeling well at the beginning of their shift.

The partner was agreeable to conducting the more strenuous work (releasing turnbuckles and rods), while Mr. Lopez performed less strenuous activity (unlocking SATLs). While conducting that unlocking exercise on one of the 13,000 TEU vessel’s lashing bridges, Mr. Lopez experienced the cardiac event and died.
