Operator Killed as Strong Storm Winds Push Crane Components Into the Harbor [Taranto, Italy – 10 July 2019]

From an unlikely source [an Italian provincial meteorological webpage] Blueoceana Company has learned of a fatal accident occurring this evening at the Ionian Sea (Gulfo di Taranto) port of Taranto, Italy. A supplemental report confirming this accident was also found in the Italian journal “Il Messaggero.”

In that accident, a thirty-one year old crane operator died as result of crushing injuries sustained when a storm with strong accompanying winds overwhelmed the crane, pushing its cab and the cab’s supporting structure into Taranto harbor.

His body was recovered several hours later.

We understand that the marine terminal segment of the facility specializes in the handling of steel products both rendered and produced by the facility’s owner, Arcelor Mittal. In this particular case, we understand that the operator (Mr. Cosimo Massaro) was moving scrap metal products at the time of the accident.
