With great regret, Blueoceana Company has received word from friends at Antwerp port that a straddle carrier operator/trainer died this afternoon as a result of a fall from a machine he had been operating at the PSA Europa terminal in that port.
At present, we have no further information as to the particulars of this accident, but we have acquired two separate media reports to which we provide links (see below).
Should additional intelligence come our way, it will be included here as an update.
UPDATE: 09 May 10:30 PM EST – We now understand that the straddle carrier operator fatally injured today has been identified as Mr. Dominique Brams, 58 years old, a 28 year veteran docker and a person extremely well regarded amongst his friends and colleagues at Antwerp port.
While we await the conclusions of the investigations being conducted, preliminary (and unconfirmed) reports suggest that Mr. Brams had raised the metal grid protecting the straddle carrier’s floor-mounted window in order to clean the glass. Then, in maneuvering around the cab, it has been alleged that he stood on the glass which gave way beneath him.
