Container Vessel EVER SUMMIT‘s stern end struck one (or both) of a ship-to- shore container gantry crane’s forward legs while coming to berth during the graveyard shift at the VanTerm facility in Vancouver, British Columbia, 28 January. The lifting appliance was knocked off its rails; at least one of its rail trucks collapsed as did the stowed (upright) boom. The latter coming to rest across on-deck container stows aboard the vessel.
From photos and videos made available to Blueoceana Company (see below), it appears clear that the crane’s “A” frame apex has become associated with a neighboring crane. With the ebb and flow of tidal conditions, concerns sill existed as to their collective stability and the potential collapse of both.
We understand that there were no reported injuries to personnel.

UPDATE: 29 January 2019; 6:30 PM EST: All sorts of craneage (including a 900 Ton floater known as “The Beast”) are engaged in the stabilization of both Cranes Nos 5 & 3 and, by tomorrow if the plan holds true, the initial dismantling of Crane No 5’s boom, back reach and machinery house will be attempted.
The terminal operator has set up an exclusionary zone for the protection of marine terminal staff, and has otherwise taken the necessary steps to ensure that the extraction and demolition work goes smoothly and without incident.
