3 Crew Members Fatally Overcome in Atmospheric Incident [Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan – 19 October 2018]

Late arriving news coming in from several sources, speaks to the atmospheric-related deaths of three Iranian crew members aboard M/V Nazmehr towards the end of last month.

Four other crew members required emergency evacuation by the Azerbaijani Coast Guard from the ship’s position in the Caspian Sea. They received treatment at an on shore medical facility and are expected to survive.

The vessel was carrying a cargo of grain, which was likely being fumigated with an Aluminum Phosphide-based preparation (the most popular being used these days) while en route to its next port.

Aluminum Phosphide preparations rapidly decompose in ambient conditions, releasing lethal phosphine gas. More often than we know, that phosphine gas drifts into adjacent spaces occupied by vessel personnel working/resting within the ship’s accommodation.
