With great regret, Blueoceana Company has been made aware of a fatal accident occurring earlier today at Neptune Terminals, North Vancouver, BC, in which a board member (not yet a member of ILWU Canada Local 500) longshore worker fell approximately 40 feet (12.2 meters) while attempting to access the bucket end of a coal stacker/reclaimer in order to perform a wash down.
He died of injuries sustained in that fall. Confirmed reports tend to hold that the expanded metal grating on the long walkway the worker was on “fell away” during use, leading to this deadly fall.
The accident is being investigated by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Employment and Social Development Canada, the terminal’s labor management site safety committee and a safety coordinator for ILWU Canada, independently.
In the fullness of time, we hope to have more information to offer about this accident at this page in the form of update(s).
