Dockworker Fatally Crushed Within Yard Tractor Cab [Jakarta, Indonesia – 08 November 2017]

With reports coming to Blueoceana Company containing regrettably  brief information, we nonetheless understand that a manpower-supplied dockworker was crushed to death while seated in the cab of a yard tractor the evening of 08 November at the ICTSI-operated marine terminal in Jakarta port.

We have been provided a photo by friends in Australia, who are certain that such photo accurately depicts the accident scene. We provide that photo here:

There are several media accounts of this accident available. We can convey two such accounts through hyperlinks (see below). It should be borne in mind that each available account mimics, to greater and lesser degrees, the press release issued by the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF). Moreover, both hyperlinked articles appear to be fundamentally in error, as they identify the container that crushed the yard tractor’s cab as being a “refrigerated container.” After being in contact with ITF, we know that they recognize the error and are adjusting their remarks accordingly. At present, no other known and publicly available account can be provided here.

In sum, (and with the understanding that emerging facts may require amendment) it appears that a twin lift of two (2) twenty foot intermodal tank containers came away from the intermodal container spreader that was hoisting the lift. With that separation, the tank containers free-fell and struck the yard tractor that was either stationary or moving below the lift. The operator, port worker Nasrul Nasution, was fatally crushed at the ICTSI Jakarta terminal. We are left to conjecture whether or not the mid point sensors on the spreader failed to recognize the intermediate corner fittings of the tanks,  how the tanks ended up in the positions shown in the photo above and why the yard tractor was under the load in the first place.

We do note that the first article linked to below mentions another fatal accident occurring at Jakarta port within the last few weeks. Here at Blueoceana Company, we’ve heard nothing about that accident and urge readers in that part of the world to relate what they may know about any such marine cargo handling accident occurring.
