Marine Terminal Supervisor Killed In Container Loading Process [San Juan, PR ~ 11 July 2016]

While media coverage is virtually non-existent, Blueoceana Company has learned that a mid-level manager who had been in the employ of Island Stevedoring of San Juan, Puerto Rico, was struck and killed by a large (1,000 lb.) bale of recycled cardboard while supervising workers in the loading of an intermodal container at the terminal operator’s Isla Grande leasehold.

In speaking with company principal’s, our understanding is that the bale fell out of stow during the forklift loading process and onto Rafaela Garcia. Sr. Garcia had been an employee of the firm for many years.

Update – 16 February 2016: Blueoceana Company understands that OSHA has issued a citation to the employer on 04 January 2017, alleging several violations of the agency’s Marine Terminals regulations.
