Marine Clerk Fatally Injured In Vehicular Accident [Los Angeles, CA ~ 30 March 2016]

While information has been minimal owing to the hour, The Blueoceana Company has received confirmation that a marine clerk (a member of ILWU Local Union 63) was killed in an accident occurring at Berth 232 in Los Angeles yesterday.

While we are withholding the fatally injured clerk’s name at present, we have confirmed that he was run over by an over-the-road trucker at the marine terminal leased to and operated by Everport Terminal Services (ETS).

Blueoceana Company can now, after proper family notification, release the name of the fatally injured worker as being that of Anthony Harris.

Mr. Harris was a 72 year old marine clerk (a member of ILWU Local Union 63), and a former member of ILWU Local Union 13. We understand that he was working in a “chalk & walk” capacity, within an RTG block of containers at the time of the accident. On the East and Gulf Coasts, checkers performing such work are known as “location men.” They identify specific containers that are being called for and delivered to over-the-road (and other) vehicles, that they mark correspondingly.

From what we now know (and can surmise), Mr Harris was working in or near an RTG service lane when he was drawn into the rear wheels of a tractor/chassis combination calling for a container within that specific block of container stows.

Investigations are underway, having being initiated by Cal-OSHA, the terminal operator and ILWU.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends, to whom we express our deepest condolences.
